Journalist Jorge Ramos, one of the most recognizable figures in Hispanic media, announced his departure from Univision in a heartfelt statement this Monday. Ramos, who has been with the network for over three decades, is leaving his role as anchor of “Noticiero Univision,” marking the end of an era for Spanish-language journalism. He’s even known as “The Walter Cronkite of Latin America.”
In his announcement, Ramos expressed gratitude to his colleagues and viewers, stating, “It has been an honor to inform and serve the Hispanic community for all these years. Now, it is time for a new chapter.”
Also in the announcement, Univision News President Daniel Coronell said: “I want to express my respect and gratitude for Jorge Ramos and all he has done for Univision and the growing community we serve each and every day. As we look to 2025 and beyond, our talented team is well equipped to continue the tradition of journalistic excellence that has defined Noticiero Univision since the beginning.”
Who is Jorge Ramos?
“This decision has been difficult, sad and took a long time,” Mr. Ramos said on “Noticiero Univision” this Monday night. “I’m profoundly thankful for these four decades. Univision has literally been my second home. I’m very proud to be a part of this great team of journalists.”
Jorge Gilberto Ramos Avalos was born in Mexico City in 1958, but he has lived in Miami since 1991. Ramos studied communication at the Universidad Iberoamericana before moving to the United States to further his studies in journalism.
He joined Univision in 1986 and quickly became the face of Noticiero Univision, where he reported on major global events, from U.S. presidential elections to humanitarian crises in Latin America. Throughout his career, Ramos interviewed influential leaders, including U.S. Presidents, Fidel Castro, and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
“He has also been a host on ‘Al Punto,’ a weekly program on Univision that features interviews with politicians and other cultural figures. Through 2021, Mr. Ramos occasionally wrote for The New York Times as a contributing opinion writer,” the NYT writes.
He’s also the host of “America with Jorge Ramos” on Fusion TV.
2015 Trump Confrontation
Known for his tough, no-nonsense style of questioning, Ramos was never afraid to hold the powerful accountable. His 2015 confrontation with then-presidential candidate Donald Trump during a press conference went viral. Ramos was briefly ejected from the event but stood firm, returning to question Trump on his immigration policies.
“Sit down, you weren’t called,” Trump snapped at Ramos at the time. “Go back to Univision.”
This incident made international headlines and, some say, solidified his reputation as a fearless advocate for immigrants and Latinos. At the time, President Trump didn’t see it that way.
“He was totally out of line last night,” Trump told TODAY’s Matt Lauer. “I was asking and being asked a question from another reporter. I would have gotten to (Ramos) very quickly. He stood up and started ranting and raving like a madman.”
Colleagues and public figures alike describe Ramos as a journalist of integrity and courage. Maria Elena Salinas, his former co-anchor at Univision, called him “a relentless seeker of truth.” Media critics have praised his ability to balance journalistic rigor with empathy, particularly in his coverage of issues affecting the Hispanic community.
