When the 2024 Golden Globe Awards nominations were released last December, the Latino community was thrilled. Three talented Latino actors had earned nods, alongside the animated film “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
Pedro Pascal, known for his role as Joel in HBO’s “The Last Of Us”; Selena Gomez starring in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” as Mabel Mora; and Colman Domingo, portraying Bayard Rustin in Netflix’s “Rustin” all received well-deserved nominations.
Yet, on the big night, not one of the nominated Latino stars won the coveted trophies, underlining a notable gap in representation at the prestigious event.
“Latino people were once again shut out at an awards ceremony, although best TV comedy winner The Bear is co-showrun by a Latina writer-producer Joanna Calo,” The Hollywood Reporter explained.
Actor and Comedian George Lopez, reflecting on Latino representation on the red carpet, shared his pride, reminiscing about the challenges faced in the industry two decades ago.
” … it makes me really proud,” Lopez said. “You know, 20 years ago, when I first started my first show, it was really tough to see somebody out .”
Although this year seems bleak, over its 80+ year history, the Golden Globes has awarded dozens of Latino stars in the entertainment industry.

- Rita Moreno won Best Supporting Actress for “West Side Story” in 1961.
- Luis Puenzo won Best Foreign Language Film for “La historia oficial.” in 1986.
- Jimmy Smits won Best Actor in a Television Drama Series for “NYPD Blue” in 1996.
- Benicio del Toro won Best Supporting Actor for “Traffic” in 2000.
- Pedro Almodóvar won Best Film in a Foreign Language for “All About my Mother” and “Talk to Her’ in 2000 and 2003.
- América Ferrera won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Series for “Ugly Betty” in 2007.
- Javier Bardem won Best Supporting Actor for “No Country for Old Men” in 2008.
- Guillermo del Toro won Best Director for “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
- Gina Rodríguez won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Television Series for “Jane the Virgin” in 2015.
- Gael García Bernal won Best Comedy Actor in a television series for “Mozart in the Jungle” in 2016.
- Oscar Isaac won Best Actor in a Television Miniseries for “Show Me a Hero” in 2016.
- Rachel Zegler won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for “West Side Story” in 2022.
- Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Musical for “West Side Story” in 2022.
- Michaela Jaé Rodríguez won Best Actress in a Drama Television Series for “Pose” in 2022.
- “Coco” won Best Animated Film in 2018.
- “Encanto” won Best Animated Film in 2022.
“As a side note, Joaquin Phoenix, born in Puerto Rico, took home the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actor for his performance in Joker in 2020,” The Golden Globes explains, adding: “The star thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for serving vegan food.”
