The weather segment might not be the most fun part of any news forecast, but John Morales ensures he captivates his audience. Whether in English or Spanish, hearing Morales speak will make your ears perk up. He’s someone who knows the weather, through and through, and has several decades of experience. How could you not have trust in the same guy who consoled South Floridians when the worst hurricane of its time, Andrew, hit in 1992?
His empathy mixed with scientific expertise gave many people the solace they needed – and he continues to have that effect today.
Who is John Morales?
John Morales is a gifted meteorologist who was born in Schenectady, New York to an Irish-American father and a Puerto Rican mother. Yet, Morales has more of a Caribbean flare as he was raised in Puerto Rico. With a career spanning renowned media platforms and a reputation for accuracy, Morales has become a revered figure in the field.
The longest-tenured broadcast meteorologist in South Florida, John Morales fostered a deep fascination with weather patterns from an early age. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he embarked on a meteorological education that eventually led him to the United States. There, he honed his skills, immersing himself in the study of atmospheric dynamics.
Equipped with his meteorological expertise, Morales embarked on a meteoric rise through the industry. Notably, he made a significant impact during his tenure at the Spanish-language news channel, WLTV channel 23, by the Univision Network, captivating viewers with his precise forecasts and relatable style. Morales’s ability to break down complex weather concepts into understandable terms made him a trusted source of information.
According to NBC Miami, he also served as Chief Meteorologist for WSCV Telemundo 51 from 2003 to 2008. Around this time, he became the first Latino to substitute as a meteorologist on NBC’s Weekend Today Show (which was an English.) His success with NBC as a substitute led him to become the Chief Meteorologist for NBC’s Miami station, WTVJ NBC-6, in 2009.
As Chief Meteorologist at NBC, he brought his insightful analysis and charismatic presence to viewers’ screens. Morales’s dynamic personality and dedication to accurate reporting cemented his position as a trusted authority on weather forecasts.
His expertise has earned several regional Emmy Awards among other accolades.

His Legacy Continues
After a remarkable career spanning three decades, John Morales announced his retirement from daily newscasts to join other projects. The announcement was made in April of 2022. Still, his legacy will endure through the countless lives he has influenced and the standard of excellence he has set for future meteorologists.
In fact, Morales still makes seasonal appearances on NBC and other news stations based on the need and his availability. He is also very active on his social media and is constantly updating his followers, including weather updates.
Ah, what’s not to love about the guy? Amirite?
